R80/100 G/S Paralever Baja Sport Special GS (998cc) 1991

£0

This bike was built as a passion project over the course of 2 years. No expense was spared in the pursuit of building a Baja Sport inspired airhead. The rebuild costs totalled in excess of £26000 so this really is an opportunity to get into ownership of a motorcycle that has had a complete upgrade for the future use of this classic.

After buying the bike, the total nut and bolt restoration began, First frame strengthening / reinforcement kit provided by SWT was added to the crucial areas of the frame for added strength. (steering head reinforcement, stiffening top to down tube, swing arm reinforcement) This was then powder coated into the Blue you see it in today.

Efforts then turned to the sub frame, this was supplied by Q-Tech, (Sports Kit), helping to reduce weight and give the bike its sports look. Work was then undertaken to improve the suspension of the bike, Using WP 48mm Forks with increased travel, and an Ohlins rear shock were added. To support the new front suspension, new fork yokes milled from high-strength aluminium (Al 7075), which is otherwise only used on parts that are subjected to very high loads (e.g. in the aerospace industry).

They offer the driver maximum manoeuvrability and handling.

The front disc brakes were upgraded to 320mm partially floating steel brake disc and new Brembo Calliper, a new Front wheel rim from HAAN WHEELS with milled wheel hub and brake disc mount made of high-strength aluminium, which is otherwise only used in aircraft construction! The Dutch high-end manufacturer HAAN WHEELS manufactures these 21" Excel wheels especially for SWT-SPORTS . With a width of 1.6 x 21" , the rims are ideal for sports and travel use.

The Excel rim rings in this high-quality design have already won numerous world championship titles in off-road sports. Many DAKAR teams have also been driving on rims from the Dutch Radeinspeicherei for years. In addition to all the technical advantages, the black rim rings "Made in Japan" with black hubs also look extremely good.

The rear wheel was then restored with new stainless spokes, and painted to match the front wheel.

The work then began adding a race engine as the heart to this bike, again, this used quality components to really help the bike get off the line. The engine has been totally rebuilt and dialled in over several Dyno sessions. Most of the engine components and upgraded parts were supplied by specialists Moorespeed.

High compression ratio pistons (std. 94mm bore)

Designed by Richard Moore in collaboration with Omega pistons, these high compression pistons offer the most cost-effective (and easiest) way to boost power. The dyno charts (see ‘Projects’) show the solid increase in both bhp and torque achieved simply by slipping in these new pistons – an extra 7bhp/5ft lbs for a couple of hours work! Combine them with a free-flowing Moorespeed air filter conversion, and gain an extra 1.5bhp/3ft lbs.

Valve guides

For use with the Moorespeed valves, these guides are now made from Trojan (ultimate super strength copper nickel silicon alloy) for better heat dissipation, and deliver a long service life with maximum efficiency.

Valves

One of the few weak points on a BMW twin concern the valves: they should be replaced at intervals of around 40,000 miles if problems of excessive wear are to be avoided. The Moorespeed valves are a one-piece design (BMW’s are two-piece) and made from a stainless forging exclusively to our specification by a specialist supplier to F1 teams - and cost less than BMW’s own parts!

These valves (which are lighter than standard) will give far longer service life, especially when fitted with the Moorespeed valve guides as they run tighter tolerances that standard and the materials are ideally matched.

Camshafts

We have identified (and reported) a manufacturing defect in a very popular sports camshaft. Our solution is to now produce our own camshafts from the same original chill-cast blanks that BMW use for their camshafts, all using the standard followers with no re-grinding or hard welding.

Race clutch

The standard BMW clutch is fine – until you start to get serious amounts of power (75bhp plus at the rear wheel), or start to abuse it severely in conditions such as desert sand. Then, the (asbestos-free) friction material cannot cope with the excess heat that is generated – and the result is slip.

This race clutch uses sintered metal friction material, which retains all the ‘feel’ of the standard clutch, and which when used in conjunction with the heavy duty diaphragm spring, easily copes with 110+bhp at the rear wheel. In use, it has a slightly heavier action than the standard item, but engagement is almost identical. Would also be very suitable for those ‘overlanding’ and wanting the extra insurance of a ‘bullet-proof’ clutch.

Dell’Orto PHM carburettors

These 38mm units give improved throttle response and slightly better overall power than the standard Bing carbs, but the biggest advantage is the far greater adjustability possible from the wide variety of needle and jet combinations.

Update early gearbox/repair late type

Enjoy a lower first ratio (minus 5%) and higher fifth gear (plus 5%).

A 5th gear is available for the layshaft with a 17.5 degree helical to repair a late layshaft or upgrade an early (15 degree) layshaft.

Free-flowing air filter

The standard air filter is quite restrictive – and the paper elements quite expensive to replace. With our design, a re-useable K&N filter is mounted vertically on an aluminium lid that fits directly onto the base of the existing air filter. The result is an extra 2bhp on a standard engine – more with a modified unit – albeit with more induction roar.

Gas flowing

While having your valve gear overhauled, now is the time to consider gas flowing – and gain an extra 1-2bhp.

Engine balancing

Gives greater smoothness for both road and race engines: only undertaken during engine overhaul.

Upgraded Starter motor (Nippondenso) upgraded alternator, new wiring loom, Kat dash LED Kit, Upgraded Headlight. Speedhut GPS Speedo and tacho. Programmable digital ignition from Sports-Evolution.

BMW performance ignition system for all R65 R80 R100 two-valve boxer engines with contactless ignition
  • the freely programmable monitoring and control unit
  • a USB stick with software and installation instructions
  • four preset ignition maps (mappings)
  • a new signal transmitter unit with a CNC-milled carrier plate, a CNC-milled housing cover, a carrier shaft with
  •  Includes trigger wheel and the new pulse generator
  • a twin coil ignition coil
  • new ignition cables
  • new spark plug caps
  • the connection wiring
The signal generator unit sits under the front engine cover and simply replaces the original component. The highlight are the long holes in the carrier plate, which simplify an exact basic setting of the system. No special tools are required for installation, but specialist knowledge of motorcycle technology is required. The installation and coordination can of course take place in our house.
All advantages at a glance:
  • Higher engine power
  • More torque
  • Lower fuel consumption
  • Quieter engine running
  • Reduced stress on engine parts
  • Clean emission behavior
  • Better run

Carbon Starter motor cover and alternator covers, Upgraded lower Foot pegs by Q-tech and Gear leaver. Heated Grips, refurbished switch gear. Renthal bar, Upgraded clutch arm in aluminium. Deep rally sump and bash plate from Motoren Israel, and upgraded oil cooler and engine temperature gauge. Stainless exhaust system, with end can supplied by Gletter. Upgraded paralever parts, centre stand adaptation for taller suspension.

Custom seat with spare seat base for an additional seat, dyno reading making 70 BHP at the back wheel.

More details on parts can be supplied, including build photos. This bike is better than new, and offers a real unique opportunity to buy a one of a kind motorcycle.

The engine has covered 300 miles running in, excluding Dyno time (3 sessions) and has had its first service since the rebuild.

HPN handguards, and updated battery and upgraded battery holder were also added.
