The R100 (not including the RT, S, RS variants) was built between 1980-84 and is powered by a twin cylinder overhead cam engine. Displacing 980cc it produces 70hp at 7,250rpm, for a claimed top speed (at date of release) of 115 mph. The standing quarter mile was accomplished in just under 13 seconds. It uses telescopic fork front suspension and a rear swingarm. 1981 was the first year that new BMW bikes were equipped with electronic ignition, nickel sill barrels, a larger oil sump, Brembo front brakes and many other innovations.
